How do you prevent food waste?

Emre Kahraman

Food waste is a huge problem that wastes millions of tons of food each year worldwide, while many people go hungry. Fortunately, we can all play a role in reducing food waste in our kitchens. In this blog post, I will show you how to achieve minimal food waste.

1. Planning and organization

One of the most important steps to reducing food waste is good planning. Make a grocery list before you go to the supermarket and only buy what you need. Try to plan meals for the week so you know exactly what ingredients you need. That way you won’t buy too much and you’ll throw away less.

2. Store food properly

The way you store food can make a big difference in how long it lasts. Use airtight containers to store leftovers and make sure your fridge is at the right temperature (around 40 degrees Fahrenheit). Store items on the right shelves; some should be refrigerated, while others are best kept outside.

3. Creative cooking with leftovers

Leftovers are often the biggest source of food waste. Try to be creative in the kitchen and make delicious dishes with what you have left. For example, leftover vegetables can be used in soups, stews or stir-fries. Old bread can be transformed into croutons or breadcrumbs.

4. Understand expiration dates

Many people throw away food once it has passed its expiration date, but these dates are often conservative. Learn to understand expiration dates and trust your senses. Smell and taste the food before you throw it away; it may still be perfectly edible.

5. Compost

Some food scraps are unavoidable, like peels and coffee grounds. Instead of throwing them in the trash, compost them. Composting is a great way to feed your garden and reduce food waste.

6. Share surpluses

If you have overcooked or over-bought produce, consider sharing it with friends, neighbors, or food banks. This will not only help reduce food waste, but also help those in need.

7. Be creative with peeling and stemming

People often throw away peels and stems, but these parts of fruits and vegetables can contain valuable flavors and nutrients. For example, make vegetable peels into stock or use them as a filling for dishes.

By following these tips, you can significantly contribute to reducing food waste in your kitchen. Not only is it good for the environment, but it also saves money and helps people in need. So let’s work together to reduce food waste and protect our planet.
